I think there's a real point he's making. Besides of course teaching the in's and outs of what a comic artist thinks about, McCloud is proving that comics are more than just a clipping on a newspaper or a 10 cent super hero story. Comics are medium. You can practice genre with comics. Here he's showing the readers that he can create a non-fiction how-to book into an engaging comic.
